Selecting Options then Preferences as
in the above example opens a configuration screen for frost. Much
of the configuration defaults will work fine for frost. It is the
author's opinion that one setting needs to be adjusted for a more
effecient experience with frost:
The section in the above screen indicating Minimum HTL is best changed to 15, this is a default HTL setting for normal freenet retrieval. I have set the Maximum HTL to 25 as HTL's beyond 25 at this time are not very meaningful in freenet. Perhaps as the network grows using higher Maximum HTL's will be of a benefit. HTL is called Hops To Live and refers to the depth with which a file is searched for in the system before the search is aborted. Additionally, in the Number of splitfile threads section, if you are on a fast connection, having a fast computer, you can use a number between 20 and 30 to see some amazingly fast download speeds using frost.
Click the upload tab next and use the
above figures. Some have suggested using Upload HTL of 25 for
inserting. If you find people are always not able to retrieve the
files you upload you may wish to increase from 20 to 25, but this author
is recommending 20 at the moment.
And finally clicking on the News tab
and using the above values should give you reasonably good success with
messaging retrieval/insertion in frost. Once you make those
changes, you may click on OK and proceed with frost as normal.
One final consideration. Click on
the News heading on frost and look at the Automatic board update section
which is highlighted in yellow here. If it has a check mark in the
box for that listing, click on that box to deselect automatic board
updating if you are on a slow connection (automatic board updating works
well if you are running frost 24/7 on a dedicated connection or if you
are on a fast connection, so if one of those applies to you, you can
leave Automatic board update checked). We shall discuss updating
boards in more detail inside of this manual.
